52 flights cancelled at Mumbai Airport; 18 killed in wall collapse in Malad

Mumbai: With Mumbai witnessing an intense spell of rains since last night, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday declared a public holiday, asking schools, colleges and offices to remain shut for the day. Mumbai local train services on all three lines – Central, Western and Harbour –  were affected with water-logging reported on railway tracks at several stations.

16 people were killed in two rain-related accidents in the city and in the neighbouring Thane.

A wall collapse in Malad East in Mumbai in the early hours of Tuesday morning resulted in the death of 13 people. The incident took place at Kurar village, Pimparipada – Malad East and the NDRF teams were deployed for rescue operations.

Meanwhile, at least three people were killed and one injured after another wall collapsed on Tuesday midnight in Kalyan. The incident took place when the wall of National Urdu School in Kalyan (West) collapsed on nearby hutments, resulting in the death of two women and a three-year-old boy.

State education minister Ashish Shelar tweeted in the wee hours of the morning that schools (public and private) will remain closed in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Konkan areas.

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to take place in areas of Mumbai on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department predicted. On the other hand, Palghar and Thane districts are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall.

The weatherman stated that 150 mm rainfall took place in Mumbai on Monday, with intermittent showers expected to occur from July 3 to July 5.

10:45 am: 18 killed in Malad wall collapse- The death toll in the wall collapse on hutments in Pimpripada area in Malad East rose to 18. The wall had collapsed at the hutments due to heavy rainfall in the area, following which NDRF and local authorities had reached the spot to rescue the people possibly trapped in the debris.

10:11 am: Flights cancelled at Mumbai airport – 52 flights have been cancelled and 54 others diverted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai owing to the inclement weather. The Main Runway of the airport is already closed and the secondary runway was operational.

10:02 am: Highest rainfall in a decade – Mumbai has recorded heaviest rainfall in a decade in the last 24 hours, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Monday. At least 150 mm of rainfall was recorded in the city yesterday. In a tweet on Monday, BMC said, “Mumbai, we understand it’s not been an easy Monday, but it’s also been a rain spell like never before – it’s the highest in a decade. 550 mm average of the entire month of June has been exceeded in just last 48 hrs. We are truly trying our best. We request a bit of caution & patience.”

9:58 am: Emergency services to remain operation in Mumbai – Only emergency services will remain functional in Mumbai on Tuesday, the Maharashtra government said, citing the heavy rainfall in the city. Brijesh Singh, the official spokesperson of the state government told news agency PTI, “The heavy rainfall has submerged the roads and rail tracks. Based on further inputs from other agencies, we have taken the decision to keep emergency services operational. We have appealed to the people not to venture out in this situation.”

9:47 am: High tide around noon in Mumbai: As per news agency ANI, high tides of about 4.59 meters are expected in Mumbai at around 11:52 am today.

9:45 am: Indian Navy teams help in rescue efforts: The Indian Navy deployed various teams to aid in rescue and relief operations in Mumbai and helped the local authorities in evacuating around 1,000 people from the low-lying area of Kurla in Mumbai. Teams from INS Tanaji and Material Organisation, along with naval diving team reached the area to help the stranded citizens. “About 1000 people have been shifted to safety with the help of NDRF, fire brigade, Naval teams as well as local volunteers. The Indian Navy teams remain in full readiness to respond as and when required,” the statement by the Indian Navy read.

9:26 am – CM Devendra Fadnavis’ message: Owing to heavy rains, Maharashtra CM on Tuesday advised people to not venture out except in case of emergencies. In a tweet, the CM said, “Due to heavy rain forecast in Mumbai even today by IMD, People are advised to stay indoors unless there is any emergency.”

9:20 am: Mumbai Local trains status on Western Line: The PRO for Western Railway on Tuesday said local trains on Western Line were being run with a frequency of 30 minutes between Vasai Road and Virar, as the water has partially receded in Nalasopara. Local trains between Churchgate and Vasai Road was running normally. However, no AC local will run today.

9:06 am: More rainfall for next two hours – In a weather update, the IMD said that intense spells of rainfall are expected to continue in the districts of Mumbai during the next two hours. The Met department predicted that intermittent heavy showers are expected in Mumbai today. The IMD said in a statement, “Clouds observed over north Maharashtra coast including Mumbai. More impact likely over south Gujarat&adjoining areas.Intermittent heavy showers expected in Mumbai today. Extremely heavy rainfall, over 200 mm recorded at many places in city; more towards suburbs in last 24 hrs.”

9:00 am: Public holiday in 3 districts – The Maharashtra government said in a statement on Tuesday that a public holiday had been declared in three districts if the state – Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban and Thane district. “Decision has been taken due to continuous rainfall and IMD warning.”

8:42 am: Water-logging in Kurla, Andheri, King’s Circle: Water-logging was reported from several areas in the Mumbai, including Dadar, Sion, Andheri, King’s Circle and Bandra. News agency ANI shared visuals of the ground floor of Kailash Parbat Society in Kurla East which was inundated following the intense spell of rains in the area.

8:31 am: 1,000 people evacuated from Kurla – Authorities have evacuated 1,000 people from Kurla as heavy downpour continues in the area. The precautionary measure has been taken in order to prevent any untoward incident due to overflowing Mithi river.

8:21 am: Worst rains since 2005, says IMD – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that the rainfall since Sunday night is “worst rains since July 2005” when several lives were lost due to the continuous heavy downpour,Mirror Now reported. The weatherman said that more rainfall is likely to take place between July 3 and July 5. The Met department has advised people not to venture out today unless absolutely necessary. IMD’s KS Hosalikar told Mirror Nowthat there was a “flood like situation” in some parts of the city.

8:14 am: RPF helps stranded passengers at Thane – Railway protection Force (RPD) provided refreshments to stranded passengers at Thane railway station after the heavy rainfall caused several suburban train services to get suspended.

8:10 am: Central Railway announces changes in Mumbai local train schedule – “Due to rains, Central Railway Suburban Services will run in following sections till further notice—CSMT-Bandra on Harbour line, Vashi-Panvel on Harbour line, Thane-Vashi-Panvel on Trans-Harbour line,4th corridor to Kharkopar, Thane-Kasara/Karjat/Khopoli on the main line,” the Central Railway said in a statement.

8:07 am: SpiceJet plane overshoots runway: A SpiceJet plane overshot the runway while landing in Mumbai airport shortly before midnight on Monday. Officials said that no passengers on the Boeing 737-800 plane which overshot the runway had been hurt in the incident. The flight was coming from Jaipur, officials said. The main runway was closed after the incident.

8:05 am: Trains on Western Line cancelled-  In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the Western Railway declared that a few trains had been cancelled or short terminated due to water-logging at Nalasopara.

8:00 am: Flights diverted – The main runway at Mumbai airport has been closed on Tuesday morning, however, the secondary runway is still functional. At least 63 flights have been diverted since last night while only four flights have been able to land at the airport between 12:30 am and 4:00 am. Flights have been diverted to Indore, Ahmedabad and Delhi.

7:30 am: Mumbai Local Train status – Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued railway traffic update at around 7 am on Tuesday, stating that a few sections on all three lines – Central, Western and Harbour – were not working due to the heavy rains. These sections are: CST to Thane (Up and Down) – Central Line; Borivali to Vasai Road (Up and Down) – Western Line; CST to Vashi Road (Up and Down) – Harbour Line.
