Rahul offers to quit as Cong chief; resignation rejected: Reports

According to several media reports, Congress president [R]ahul Gandhi has offered to step down from the post in the aftermath of the general election results at the Congress Working Committee meeting, which is currently underway. The offer, however, has reportedly been rejected by senior party members.

The CWC meeting was called by Gandhi to review the party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha elections, where it has secured a mere 52 seats.

The CWC meeting, chaired by Congress president Rahul Gandhi, is being attended by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Uttar Pradesh (East) in-charge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra & chief ministers of four party-ruled states – Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh – & the Union Territory of Puducherry.

On 24 May, [R]ajasthan Chief Minister [A]shok Gehlot, in a series of tweets had rejected the “rumors” of Rahul Gandhi’s resignation & called them “baseless & irrelevant”. He wrote, “We shall never forget that it was because of Sh. Rahul Gandhi’s tireless efforts & fighting spirit that Congress was able to put up a strong challenge to [NDA] government.”
