Amid ongoing unrest in the hills of Darjeeling, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporter was on Saturday found dead.

However, the GJM and other hill parties have lodged a police complaint accusing the police of killing the youth.

The incident happened when Tashi Bhutia was on his way back home at Sonada at around 12.30 AM, GJM sources told PTI.

“The youth was killed by police without any reason. His body has bullet injuries. We demand that the policemen involved be punished,” GJM leader Binay Tamang said.

The police official said that they don’t have any reports of police firing as of now. “We are looking into the incident. We can give you details in the afternoon,” an official said.

The situation in Darjeeling remained tense on the 24th day of the indefinite shutdown which has crippled normal life in the hills and its neighbouring areas.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has appealed to the chairmen and vice-chairmen of all development boards in the hills, formed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to resign immediately and join the Gorkhaland movement, which it is spearheading.

On Friday, the GJM took out a rally from Darjeeling station to Chowkbazar in the afternoon to press its demand for withdrawal of forces from the hills and restoration of Internet services, which have been snapped since June 18.

Police and security forces kept a tight vigil on each and every exit and entry routes to the hills.

With food supply severely hit due to the ongoing shutdown, GJM activists and NGOs of the hills were seen distributing food items among the people.

Except pharmacies, all shops, schools and colleges remained closed.
