The ongoing surveillance on ultrasound centres and unscrupulous medical professionals by the Health Department has been quite successful. A team of senior health officials unearthed an illegal ultrasound centre and seized a portable ultrasound machine from a residential premise in Daad village on Pakhowal Road here today.
The Civil Surgeon, Dr Rajiv Bhalla, who led the team of officials with Dr SP Singh, District Family Planning Officer, said Bhupinder Singh had kept the machine at his house and it was probably being used by certain unscrupulous medical professionals for pre-conception and pre-natal sex determination test. “Both ultrasound centre and the machine are illegal and the machine has been handed over to the police after sealing,” said Dr Bhalla.
The Civil Surgeon said Bhupinder Singh, who is a non-medical person, had migrated from some place in Haryana and he might be having links with an inter-state racket of pre-natal sex determination test, which is a lucrative affair for unscrupulous medical professionals.
According to Dr Bhalla, it might be too early to say something definitely but it seemed that Bhupinder Singh might have shifted to Ludhiana after the crackdown on illegal sex determination centres by the Haryana Government. It may be recalled that the Ambala police had conducted raids last month on an ultrasound centre in the city which had links with Dera Bassi and Ambala.
He said a complaint under PCPNDT Act had been lodged with the police, who were making further investigation into the matter.
