Amid an ongoing political crisis that has hit the Congress- Janata Dal (Secular) government in Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara has offered to resign. Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy, who was in the US returned to Bengaluru in a special chartered flight to address the situation. A total of 11 MLAs — eight of the Congress and three of the JD(S) — resigned over the weekend. Later, 10 MLAs left for Mumbai and are reportedly lodged in a hotel.
“I’ve called a breakfast meeting of all the Ministers belonging to Congress party, to discuss the present political developments & the fallout. We know what BJP is trying to do. If need be, all of us may resign & then accommodate the MLAs,” Parameshwara was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy, who rushed back from his 10-day US trip, held a meeting with JD(S) chief HD Deve Gowda to discuss the political situation in the state. Former CM Siddaramaiah appealed to party leaders to not speak against the government. The state leadership also blamed BJP for the crisis in the government, a claim the BJP has denied.
“We are 10 MLAs here. A total 13 MLAs have submitted resignation to Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar and Governor Vajubhai Bala. We all are together. No question of going back to Bengaluru and withdrawing the resignations,” Karnataka Congress MLA ST Somashekar said on Sunday.
“I and my party have nothing to do with developments in other rival parties. I heard through media that Congress-JD(S) legislators have resigned from their Karnataka Assembly seats. I’m categorically reiterating that BJP has absolutely no say on the issue,” Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa said on Sunday.
Yeddyurappa further added that his party will explore the opportunities to form a government in the state.
