for showcasing their collection during London Fashion Week
Independent Designers Jasminumand AvleenAnand&2 INIFD Students DesignersAkshay Sehgal and Gagandeep Singh Tuli from INIFDLudhianacentre were honoured by Indian High Commission at London to applause their contribution to utilise India’s enormous traditional design heritage to make a lasting impact on the Global Fashion scene.
At a special felicitation ceremony held at India House London, the Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Dinesh K Patnaik felicitated the designers for showcasing their collection on India Day during prestigious London Fashion Week held at Fashion Scout.
Mr. Patnaik applauded the young INIFD Designers for taking forward the 5 F mission of honourable Prime Minister of India Sh. Narendra Modi, “From Farm to Fiber, Fiber to Fabric, Fabric to Fashion and Fashion to Foreign”
These Young Student Designers were awarded the ticket to London by Ace Indian Designer Manish Malhotra as they were selected amongst the 500 applicants from all across the country to represent INIFD on India Day during London Fashion Week at Fashion Scout London. The leading Indian Designer Masaba Gupta closed the India Day with a Grand Finale Collection.
All these collections were highly appreciated by the media, guests, celebrities and audience who witnessed these shows. The collections were covered by the most prestigious Fashion Magazine, “BRITISH VOUGE” and many other British Fashion Blogs, Journals & Websites.
Kuldeep Kaur- a senior fashion design faculty at INIFD Ludhiana informed that there were 2 categories of shows in London Fashion Week during Fashion Scout – one for the independent designers named “INNOVATION- X” and the other -student designer category named ” THE RANGEEN ROIT”. Ms Jasminum Kaur and Ms AvleenAnand showcased their collections in Innovation X where as Mr Akshay Sehgal and Mr Gagan deep Singh Tuli showcased their collection in The RangeenRoit. Both shows were inspired by rich cultural heritage of India with western aesthetics and silhouettes. This unique combination of east and west was highly appreciated by critics, buyers and fashion lovers.
The first collection presented in the independent designer category was by Jasminum Kaur. The name of the theme was ” Rhapsody of Dunes.” It is worth mentioning that Ms Jasminum is an alumnus of INIFD Ludhiana and is now an established designer and owns her own brand “Jasminum.”
The inspiration of her collection was from mesmerizing 7 colors of mother of earth. The styling had touches of 60’s glamour on clothing that does not go out of the fashion.
AvleenAnand, who is still a student of INIFD Ludhiana, also runs and owns “MA Avleen”, a women’s wear brand from Ludhiana. Her designs specially focussed on indo-western outfits made by the use of different types of hand embroidery and printing techniques.
She had got a golden chance of participating in London fashion week from INIFD-Ludhiana. Her collection named “PERSIAN BAHAAR” was based upon the natural motifs as she is a nature lover. She got inspired from PARSI EMBROIDERY which is getting extinct.
The biggest challenge of reviving and working with an ancient craft like ParsiGara Embroidery was that she needed to create her own imagery without slavishly reproducing it, informed a beaming AvleenAnand. “PARSI EMBROIDERY” has became an inseperable part of traditional indian textiles. The embroidery is an asthetic composition of pictorial traditions and an emblem of elegance. This exquisite textiles form is truly an intercultural craft, Avleen added.
Avinash, a faculty member at INIFD Ludhiana said that Avleenhad chosen this reviving art as her inspiration as this multicolored handwork inspired her a lot. The hardwork done by the craftsmen is very tough and time consuming. Hermulticolored artwork shows the traditional motifs of flowers,birds,human figures and daily life scenes. This shows that the Indian tradition is full of happiness and life.
Student Designer Gagandeep Singh Tulli’s Capsule Collections were inspired by a book “FEATHERS OF THE DAWN” written by “SAROJINI NAIDU”. It influenced him a lot to use Feathers as EMBLISHMENTS in his collection
The DAWN such as Yellow, Orange, Peach, Sea Green and black inspired from KERALA’S images of sunset beauty surrounded by the Nature. The colours in his collection gave the séance of Freedom and unity.
AmardeepLall, the Additional Director of INIFD Ludhiana said, “GagandeepTuli had won the coveted title ‘Best Designer of the INIFD Fashion Week’ and impressed the audience phenomenally during the Fashion Week organised by INIFD Ludhiana recently. He was highly motivated after winning this award and had set a target of showcasing his creative ideas on the international ramp, which he has successfully done.”
Designer Akshay Sehgal’s collection were inspired from Army because of the stories of he heard during his childhood from his Grand Father and Maternal Grand Father. Moreover, he was inspired from the movie “Pan Singh Tomar” based on an army men. The man turned to dacoity with uniform and guns.
His collection showcased the “Camouflage” in a very unique and distinguished manner. A proud Akshay said that his collection was made by keeping in mind the women empowerment, a lady who can manage the personal as well as professional life together. His collection gave a feel of confidence, chivalry and armor with an attitude of emancipation and liberation.
The student designers were honoured by the Directors of the institute and given away trophies for their achievement.
Arvind Gupta, Centre Director, INIFD Ludhiana said that these designers have made India and INIFD proud and wished them good luck for their future”.
