LUDHIANA, March 8 (000): On International Women’s Day, a state-level conference on ‘Role of Women In the Police’ was held at Guru Nanak Bhawan on Thursday.
Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya (retired), who was the first woman Director General of Police (DGP) in the nation, was the chief guest of the conference. She was DGP of Uttrakhand.
Addressing the gathering, she said that it was heartening to see that a number of girls have joined the force and hoped that the percentage would be increased more. She said that such conferences would go a long way in providing a common platform to the women and ensuring their maximum participation in the force.
She said that women police officials should be given equal opportunities in police functioning including investigation, law and order and other crucial duties. She also hailed the Punjab Police Officials for the holding conferences which focus on women empowerment in the force.
DGP (Administration) Punjab MK Tiwari also addressed the conference and told that a standing committee would prepare a report over the suggestions procured in the earlier three zonal level conferences held at Amritsar, Patiala, and Jalandhar and here. He told that then, members of the standing committee would hold meetings with senior officials to implement these suggestions in a time-bound manner.
IGP Provisioning Gurpreet Kaur Deo said that women police employees should not hesitate to approach internal committees if they are facing any kind of harassment from the male officials. She said that Punjab DGP Suresh Arora is very much serious about complaints by women employees and he acts swiftly on the complaints to provide justice to the employees.
Two interactive sessions were also held in this conference in which the women police employees asked the questions from the senior women police officials and gave valuable suggestions.
Former Uttrakhand DGP Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya (retired) was also honored at this conference.
Director Punjab Police Academy Phillaur Anita Punj, IGP (NRI Affairs and Women Welfare) Ishwar Singh, Ludhiana Police Commissioner RN Dhoke, IGP (Personnel) V Neerja, DIG-cum-joint director Punjab Police Academy Phillaur Yurinder Singh, AIG (CI) Gurpreet Singh Toor, SSP Fatehgarh Sahib Alka Meena and several officials from other districts were present in this conference.
