Rajkumar Hirani gave up the next Munnabhai film to make Sanju. In hindsight, this was the right decision.

Sanju, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has been setting fire to ticket windows ever since its release on June 29. The film crossed Rs 200 crore within a week, and is now about to enter the Rs 300-crore club in its third week.

Not just this, Sanju has crossed the coveted Rs 500-crore mark worldwide. The worldwide earnings stand at Rs 500.43 crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the figures.

The biopic on the life of one of Bollywood’s most controversial actors, Sanjay Dutt, has been receiving much praise from the fans, though critics have slammed the film for whitewashing Dutt’s image.

Ranbir, who has delivered the biggest hit of his career with Sanju, has earned many accolades for his performance.

About Sanju whitewashing his image, Dutt told India Today’s Rahul Kanwal, “I just want to say that Munna Bhai was already made, that avatar was already out. I don’t think anyone would spend Rs 30-40 crore to change his image. That is too much of an amount. I have told the truth and the truth has been accepted by India, and the box office collection shows that,” the actor said, adding that he was happy that people were learning from his mistakes.

Apart from Ranbir, Sanju has an ensemble cast that includes Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal and Manisha Koirala.
