After the raging floodwaters wreaked havoc in Assam, Bihar and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Akshay Kumar has come forward to help the flood victims. The actor has donated Rs 1 crore each to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and the Kaziranga National Park to help with the rescue and rehabilitation of flood victims.
The Mission Mangal actor took to Twitter to announce the news. He wrote, “Absolutely heartbreaking to know about the devastation by floods in Assam. All affected, humans or animals, deserve support in this hour of crisis. I’d like to donate 1cr each to the CM Relief Fund & for Kaziranga Park rescue. Appealing to all to contribute @CMOfficeAssam @kaziranga_ (sic).”
This is not the first time that the actor has come forward for a philanthropic cause. In May, when Odisha was grappling with Fani Cyclone, the actor donated Rs 1 crore to help the victims rebuild their lives.
The actor has been involved in other charitable activities, be it the Bharat Ke Veer initiative for the armed forces, or his contribution during the Kerala floods or Chennai floods.
Priyanka Chopra has also requested her fans to contribute for the flood victims. She took to Twitter and wrote, “Extremely devastated by all the news coming in from #Assam and other parts of India. It’s heartbreaking to read about the displacement and loss of life. My prayers with those affected. Please donate.”
Till Tuesday, the floods have claimed around 55 lives in the two states of Assam and Bihar. Rain-related incidents claimed 14 lives in Uttar Pradesh.
The Indian Army is also closely monitoring the flood situation in close coordination with civil administration in flood-prone areas. A reserve of 95 flood relief columns along with additional 31 columns by the Indian Army have been kept on stand by, in view of the worsening flood situation in the eastern region.
Floodwaters in Assam rose overnight with the Brahmaputra river, which flows down from the Himalayas to Bangladesh, and its tributaries, are still overflowing. Most of the Kaziranga National Park, home to the rare one-horned rhinoceros, is underwater.
