On World No Tobacco Day as part of healthcare endeavour, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Ludhiana organized an interactive awareness session detailing industry on the devastating harms of tobacco to health and the availability of solutions to curb tobacco related disease. This was executed by Dr Vikesh Gupta, Senior Consultant – MD (Internal Medicine USA), SPS Hospital, Ludhiana at CII Member company , Bonn Foods premises.
As per WHO, the global tobacco epidemic kills more than 7 million people each year, of which close to 9 Lakhs are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke. Tobacco is one of the most common and preferred forms of addiction. Even though scientific evidences have revealed its harmful health effects, the use of tobacco in different forms has seen a dramatic increase, especially in the developing countries. This potentially lethal substance is responsible for more than 1 in 10 fatalities globally, with India featuring among the top four users of tobacco. About 11.2 percent smokers worldwide are Indian.
Adding on to the preventive measures to be adopted, Mr Gaurav Sehgal, Chairman – Ludhiana Zonal Council urged members to protect people from exposure to tobacco smoke by creating completely smoke-free indoor places, workplaces and labour colonies. Headded that Life is very Precious and one should take control of it completely and certainly avoid consumption of tobacco.
Amongst others Mr Inderjit Nagpal, Past Chairman – Ludhiana Zonal Council and CII Senior Members from Ludhiana Zone joined the awareness session.
