In reference to International Mother Tongue Day celebration on 21st February, Bajaj college (Aff. to PU and situated at Chaukimann) celebrated this occasion on Saturday. A declamation and poetry recitation competition was organised by the Punjabi department for the students. Students enthusiastically took part in the above contest based on the theme regarding the ‘decreasing use of Punjabi language’ despite it being the mother tongue of the majority of population in Punjab. Other perfomances like speeches, singing songs, etc were also exhibited on the stage by the students.
According to UNESCO, Punjabi language has become one of the endangered languages and if the scenario continues it is sure that it will become an extinct language one day. Thus, it is necessary that the youth needs to come forward and shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding it. Sukhpreet kaur was declared the winner of the declamation competition followed by Charanjeet Singh and Isher Singh. Amanjot Singh and Sukhdeep Singh shared the award of the Best Poet. At last, principal, Dr. Shikha Dhall, encouraged the students to use their mother tongue as frequently as possible and be proud of it.
