So far, so good! 2019 has truly been a phenomenal year for the box office. Just halfway through the year, we have already seen eight centuries at the ticket windows, seven of which have been hit by Hindi films.
While Hollywood superhero flick Avengers: Endgameshocked us with its gigantic Rs 373.22 crore, a medium-budget Uri: The Surgical Strike, with a lifetime collection of Rs 245.36 crore, turned out to be a game-changer. Kabir Singh sprang a major surprise as it hit the Rs 200 crore club becoming Shahid’s first solo film to do so. Salman Khan’s Bharat, on the other hand, emerged a superhit with Rs 210.68 crore. However, by the superstar’s standards, its performance was rather underwhelming. With Kesari, Akshay Kumar delivered his biggest hit ever. The film went on to collect Rs 154.41 crore.
Films Total Dhamaal, Gully Boy, De De Pyaar De, Luka Chuppi, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi and Badla were among the top performers. Kalank, despite its poor show, added Rs 80.35 crore to the half-yearly box-office kitty. A mediocre performer, Student of the Year 2 earned Rs 69.11 crore.
Together, the aforementioned films have collected a towering Rs 2012.64 crore, which clearly suggests that the emergence of OTT platforms has had a negligible effect on the box office. The tradition of watching movies on the big screen, it appears, is not going to die anytime soon.
