At least three people were killed and several people were left injured on Sunday evening after an unidentified gunman opened fire at a food festival in Gilroy, California. More than a dozen ambulances and fire department units were rushed to the festival ground that is located some 30 miles south of San Jose. The total number of casualties was not immediately known, however, some reports suggested that over a dozen injured persons have been rushed to a nearby hospital so far. The Gilroy Police Department has said that the crime scene still remains “active”.
According to reports, the police received a call at around 05:30 pm local time about a man who has opened fire at people gathered around at from Gilroy Garlic Festival, California. Dozens of ambulances and fire department units were dispatched to the incident site to control the situation. As per an eyewitness, “I could see him shooting in just every direction. He wasn’t aiming at anyone specifically. It was just left to right, right to left.”Gilroy Police Department issued an alert in public saying, “The hearts of Gilroy PD and entire community go out to the victims of today’s shooting at the Garlic Festival. The scene is still active. If you are looking for a loved one, please go to the reunification center at Gavilan College at parking lot B.”
After the horrific incident, US President Donald Trump tweeted: “Law Enforcement is at the scene of shootings in Gilroy, California. Reports are that shooter has not yet been apprehended. Be careful and safe!”
Senator Kamala Harris, who is running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, took to her Twitter account and said, “Grateful to first responders who are on the scene in Gilroy and keeping those injured by such senseless violence in my thoughts.”
Shootings are a frequent occurrence in the United States, but despite the scale of the gun violence problem in the country, efforts to address it legislatively have long been largely deadlocked at the federal level.
