Sikhs are sore after religious symbol khandawas reportedly found engraved on Punjabi juttis being sold at a shop in the city. During a gatka programme conducted at Shimlapuri on Sunday evening, jathedar Manmohan Singh Bhagowalia brought the matter to the notice of Akali Dal councillor and former chairman of district planning board Jagbeer Sokhi.

Bhagowalia, a resident of Shimlapuri, also gave a pair of the objectionable shoes as evidence to Sokhi. These were bought from a shop located in Karimpura Bazaar. People present on the occasion seethed, but Sokhi pacified them with a promise of strict action against the manufacturer and the seller.

Sokhi told the TOI, “This seems to be a planned mischief because besides engraving our religious symbol khanda, which is part of the Khalsa flag, the manufacturer has used cloth of Rumala Sahib for making the jutti. Earlier too, this was brought to my knowledge, but at that time we could not get evidence. But on Sunday, a woman bought a pair and handed it over to Bhagowalia. This is highly objectionable, but I request community members to exercise restraint and help us nab the culprits.”

On Monday, Sokhi went to Amritsar and submitted a complaint to Kirpal Singh Badungar, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president, and sought strict action against the manufacturer and the seller. He also met Sakattar Singh, secretary of the SGPC flying squad, and apprised him of the matter.
Badungar said, “It’s a serious issue. I have asked a committee to investigate the case and submit a report. The panel members will reach Ludhiana on Tuesday. Strict action will be taken against the culprits.”
