In the wake of the trending #METOO confessions, after Bollywood celebrities, it seems to be the turn for political personalities. On Wednesday, the Minister of States for Foreign Affairs, MJ Akbar, stepped down from his post after being accused of sexual misconduct towards several women.
The journalist- turned- politician resigned amid ab growing view in the BJP that apart form the legal aspect of the allegations, the broader perceptions over the controversy were damaging.The 67-year-old is facing flak over the allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women, with Opposition parties mounting an attack on the government and demanding his ouster.
Akbar thanked Prime Minister, Narender Modi, and Minster of Foreign Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, fort he opportunity to serve the nation. He further stated that he would challenge the false accusations against him, in personal capacity.
On Sunday, after returning from an official visit to Nigeria, the minister refrained from speaking to the media, Later on Monday, he filed a defamation case against Priya Ramani — one of the first woman, to publicly accuse Akbar, her former boss, of sexual misconduct. The next hearing for the case has been set for 31st October 2018 in Patiala House.
