LUDHIANA: In an initiative which might turn Ludhiana railway station as a model for other stations across the country, the income tax department has started setting up a vertical garden on station walls.
Under the green plastic initiative of the income tax department, more than 10,000 bottles and plants will be installed at the railway station in the first phase.
Department’s green team comprising chief commissioner of income tax Binay K Jha and additional commissioner Rohit Mehra launched the project on Thursday.
Abhinav Singla, director, Ludhiana railway station, said, “Vertical garden is really a wonderful initiative and I was highly impressed with this idea when I first saw it. What is even more heartening that the departments like income tax and IRS are pursuing this great cause and inspiring others.”
“Importantly, we need not worry about finding open space for plantation. We are thankful to our divisional railway manager Vivek Kumar who is leading from the front to make Ludhiana railway station cleanest and greenest in the country,” he added.
Singla said, “Our main aim of installing vertical gardens at the railway station is to make Ludhiana railway station the greenest and cleanest in the country. Through this project we also want to beautify our railway station and inspire railway employees, passengers to plant more trees.”
The walls of platform number one will be covered with plants in the first phase which will take 7-10 days for completion. Afterward, work will start on inside walls of the waiting room where fragrance emitting plants will be planted.
Vertical gardens will also be installed on the main entrance of the railway station and near the current reservation center.
